The Washington Redskins football team represents our nation's capital, and by association our nation's government. Our country will never be free of racism while the government tacitly supports it.
The owners and managers of the Washington Redskins defend their name saying that it is meant to honor Native Americans. The simple fact is that the word has never been used to honor Natives. At best it is a sweeping generalization, a stereotype. In the worst of times it was used to describe the blood soaked pieces of flesh turned in by bounty hunters to prove they had killed a Native. Even if there was nobody left to offend it should not be used.
We call upon the president to sign an executive order preventing the Washington Redskins from associating themselves with the City of Washington.
