There should be a legal distinction between Marriage, the spiritual binding of two individuals, and the legal binding of two individuals.
The problem most people have with "Gay Marriage" is that it goes against their religion. Marriage is a religious process; separation of church and state ought to dictate that the government has no say in who can or can not get married. This should be the church's decision. However, the legal rights associated with being married should still go into effect, simply from a different ceremony, one that is strictly legal. This way, if the church has a problem with "Gay Marriage", the couple can still enjoy the legal rights without offending someone's religion.
