Change the way private student loan debt is classified during bankruptcy. Treat it like other forms of personal debt.

Created by R.P. on January 27, 2012

The goal of this petition is to change the way student loan debt, from private lenders, is treated during the bankruptcy process. Currently it is very difficult for private student loans to be discharged during bankruptcy and are treated on the same level as taxes, child support, etc. This places an undue burden upon young people at a vulnerable time in their lives. It also does not provide them equal protection under current law and needs to be changed. There is no reason for debt from private student loans to be given special treatment and should be treated like other regular forms of personal debt.

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 was changed at the last minute to include private student loans and this needs to change
