The United States went through a 14 year period of Reconstruction. Amendments 13, 14 and 15 were passed in accordance with Reconstruction. In Amendment 14 Section 1 (1868), the word "person" appears twice. "Person" was the term used to represent newly freed slaves after Congress ratified the 13th Amendment in 1866. Since there are no more newly freed slaves, this word is outdated. Illegal immigrants who travel to the United States are guaranteed "the equal protection of the laws" promised by this Amendment. Simply changing the two instances of the word "person" would deny them this right. As it is not explicitly implied "person" does not represent a citizen of the USA. It must be changed to "US Citizen" as only the citizens who are born in the USA or are legal should retain this right.
