Article XIV, subdivision 4 of the U.S. Constitution states: "The validity of the public debt of the United States..., shall not be questioned.". Therefore, any lawmaker who attempts to hold the debt hostage during the lawmaking process, for political gain or any other reason, must be charged with treason. We cannot afford to have the country's credit rating downgraded again; last time it hurt all Americans and created ripple effects in many other countries.
