The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has a policy that makes it very difficult for children to visit with their parents.
When someone is sentenced to serve time in federal prison, they are often sent hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles away from where their children live. If a prisoner requests a transfer to be closer to their children, the BOP will not allow the transfer if the prisoner is within 500 "air miles" of his or her home--EVEN WHEN THE PRISONER CAN SHOW FAMILY HARDSHIP.
The Obama administration should change this policy. Children of incarcerated parents should not be punished because of their mom or dad's mistake. We should have compassion on children who want to see their parent in federal prison.
