ESSA lays the guidelines for educators across the nation, but leaves the arts and therefore arts educators in neglect. Music is mentioned 4 times in the law, theatre and dance are not mentioned at all. The performing arts do not have a presence,are invisible,and potentially ignored. The arts are listed generically 44 times and are included in a long laundry list of things that “may” constitute a state’s plan for educational renewal. We the people would like the government to define the role of each of the arts (music,theatre,dance) as separate,essential, viable disciplines within the context of a well rounded education. All performing arts should be recognized as critical areas of study and not relegated to the supporting actor’s role in the educational experience of America’s children.
