Currently, the USA requires foreign applicants for tourist visas to prove to a consular official that they intend only to visit the US. The US government, however, will not publish any guidelines outlining what constitutes such proof. The assumption under which consular officials work is that all applicants intend to overstay their tourist visas.
Under current consular rules in China, US officials actually prohibit issuing tourist visas to spouses and families of US citizens (presuming that the citizens are trying to circumvent immigration policy),
The presumption of guilt at the core of these policies is un-American, is unfair, and should abolished.
America should welcome all tourists -- not just rich ones with political connections.
