Over the past few decades, internet has transformed from a novelty to a convenience to an absolute necessity of life. Important documents, which were once printed and sent through the mail, are now just a click away. However, the system is broken. Just recently, Sweden surpassed the US, making us #9 in the world for wi-fi speeds. In part this is due to greedy service providers who raise rates without improving services. Lack of competition has put internet progress at a standstill, as it is virtually impossible for a new startup to gain any market share. Now that internet is just as vital to everyday life as gas or electricity, it's time that the government regulate it as a public utility. This country invented the internet, now lets reinnovate it.
