With the recently convened 113th Congress we would like to see some progress when it comes to debate on the Senate floor. Rather than having a constant stalemate due to senators simply using the silent filibuster we would like to restore the talking filibuster. The filibuster was originally intended to protect the minority party and its interests; however it has now become a device for obstruction. If a senator and their constituents are so opposed to a piece of legislation the Senator should have one opportunity to filibuster legislation and once they surrender the floor they are no longer permitted to filibuster on that legislation. If they are not willing to stand for what they believe in by using a talking filibuster then they are not fit to prevent a vote.
