Within the U.S. are a number of internal non-border checkpoints as far as 100 miles inland from the border. The ACLU has estimated that about 3/4 of Americans live within this zone, and twelve whole states fall within it.
These checkpoints violate the presumption of innocence and the natural right of people to freedom of movement. If an officer has probable cause of a "mala in se" crime, then the Constitution authorizes detainment; but merely being on a particular road does not fit the bill. Such actions are more befitting a totalitarian regime than our Republic - to say nothing of the violence and arrests that have resulted from refusal to be stopped.
We need to close these checkpoints and redouble efforts along the ACTUAL border, not arbitrarily detain people on their daily commute.
