Guantanamo Bay has been used to keep detained individuals from overseas in our nation's protracted "War on Terror," and many of these individuals have no hope of ever seeing any sort of trial, or even a military tribunal. The right to a fair and speedy trial are provided by the 6th Amendment, and terms for treating citizens of other nations who are being detained are defined by the Geneva Convention. It is imperative that we reaffirm these rights, and ensure that all humans receive fair and equal treatment under the law.
Closing Guantanamo is an important first step. In addition, we need to allow the court system of this country to do the job the Constitution created it to do. Justice will be served, but only if it is allowed to work. Detaining persons indefinitely is not justice.
