We call on President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to address the detentions at Guantánamo Bay as a human rights issue that requires urgent action. Of the 166 prisoners being held at Guantánamo, 100 are part of a hunger strike to protest their imprisonment without trial or redress. President Obama today expressed support for the closing of Guantánamo - we ask that this commitment be fulfilled.
Guantánamo detainees should either be charged and prosecuted in fair trials or released to countries that will respect their human rights.
The USA should also recognize the applicability of, and fully respect international human rights law, when conducting counterterrorism operations, including detentions in Guantánamo and elsewhere.
