We the people request that the President fulfill his campaign promise to close the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The detention camp has historically been used as an extraterritorial site where inhumane interrogations can be held far from the prying eyes of the public or the media. Guantanamo Bay is viewed both at home and abroad as a symbol of US cruelty and brutality.
The government of Cuba does not regard the occupation of the bay as "legal" and under the original Cuban-American Treaty of 1903 the use of the area as an interrogation facility violates the terms of the treaty.
As long as Guantanamo stands the US cannot hope to improve its standing abroad. Furthermore in maintaining Guantanamo we violate not only the Geneva Convention, but also the dignity of mankind.
