In 2009 President Obama opened promised to close Guantanamo Bay. The prison still operates and houses some 166 "enemy combatants," many of whom have been cleared of crimes or were never charged with any crimes in the first place. Our entire legal system has been thwarted in a panic, knee-jerk reaction to September 11th. But 13 years is far too long for knee-jerking.
While the situation is incredibly complicated, taking no action and incarcerating innocent individuals is not the correct response. Fulfill the promise made years ago and close Guantanamo Bay. If there are actual terrorist suspects, give them the same rights every American has: a trial.
