Close Guantananmo Bay Detention Camp

The Guantanamo Bay detention camp was established in Jan. 2002 by the Bush Administration to hold detainees it determined to be connected with the opponents in Afghanistan and later Iraq. The Bush administration asserted that detainees were not entitled to any of the protections of the Geneva Conventions. Since then, US Supreme Court decisions have determined otherwise. According to US authorities, 779 detainees have been held in Gitmo, the majority without charge or criminal trial.
On Jan. 22, 2009, President Obama signed an order to suspend the proceedings of the Guantanamo military commission for 120 days with plans that it would be shut down within the year.
On Jan. 7, 2011, President Obama signed the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill restricting prisoner transfers, impeding its closure.
