Surabaya Zoo, also known as KBS, was founded in 1916 and is the one of the largest zoos in South East Asia. The zoo has had widespread allegations of mistreatment, corruption, and uncontrolled breeding.
The Zoo says there are 2,800 animals living there, but it's most likely closer to 4,000. Zookeepers are to blame for most of the animal deaths. It is said that they are stealing meat to sell on the black market. Animals are also being stolen by the zookeepers and sold.
The zoo is unable to separate animals, so breeding is out of control. Example: nearly 200 pelicans inhabit a filthy enclosure the size of a basketball court. They do not have the room to move their wings.
We must close this zoo, save the captive animals, and bring those responsible to justice. We cannot allow more to die.
