For too long, the United States has skirted both the Constitution and international law by operating a detention facility within the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Prisoners there have described abuse ranging from sleep deprivation to beatings to electric shocks to even sexual assault.
The New York Times just published an op-ed entitled "Gitmo Is Killing Me," in which a detainee who HAS NOT OFFICIALLY BEEN CHARGED WITH A CRIME described his time in the facility and his current hunger strike. This man has spent 11 of his 35 years alive as a prisoner. He has not had a trial, nor will he if everything continues forward as it has.
This needs to stop. The United States is, among other things, supposed to be about "Liberty and Justice for All". There is no justice in Guantanamo.
