The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first to cross what is now the western portion of the United States. The expedition lasted three years; starting in May 1804 until September 1806. There have been many coins honoring this great expedition. However, there has been a person who I feel has not received the honor he deserved for his part in this great American expedition. York (Clark's slave) has not recieved a coin honoring the many contributions he made.
I think remarks made by James Holmberg at the dedication of the statue of York in Louisville Kentucky said it best; "The very thing that marked him inferior in the world he had come from -his black skin- now made him superior. Lewis and Clark realized...and used York whenever necessary...help advance the expedition and its mission."
