Since both sides want extremes on these measures why don't we come up with a compromise like mandatory National Guard service fora set amount of time between the age of 18-30 and after they are done with their service they can keep their assault weapons. Or you cant buy an assault weapon or high capacity magazine till you are 25 and take a formal class kind of like the Utah concealed weapons permit. I am 21 and I wouldn't mind having mandatory national guard service similar to Israel or Switzerland. It doesn't even have to be that extreme it could be 6 months. The reason we have the second amendment isn't for home defense it is to protect us from the government so therefor we should have the same small arms as military personnel, but if we all are military than we already have the weapons.
