Command the AG to immediately direct the U.S. Marshal Service to cease and desist arrests for student loan debt.

Created by M.H. on February 16, 2016

Seven U.S. Marshals armed with automatic weapons violently arrested a Houston, Texas man for having defaulted on a $1,500 student loan debt. Further, despite being taken into custody, he was allegedly denied certain rights granted to defendants in quasi-criminal actions. These are non-governmental/private 3rd party debt collectors in civil actions using the force of the Federal government to resurrect debtors' prison, a practice the U.S. eliminated under Federal law in 1833. Lastly, as debtors prisons have done in the past, this practice will disproportionately affect the most disadvantaged and disenfranchised of our citizenry. Mr. President, as a constitutional scholar, I hope that this concern receives your utmost attention. Thank You.
