Obama Must Address The Epidemic Military Rape Culture
The Marine Corps is the most resistant of the services to full gender integration. It not only has the smallest proportion of women of all the services — 7%, compared with 14% in the Army & 15% in the Navy — but also has the highest rate of sexual assault, with 8 % of female Marines reporting being raped in 2014 , according to the Defense Department.
Women veterans ages 18-29 have the highest suicide rates killing themselves at nearly 12 times the rate of nonveterans. The Defense Department believes this is a result of sexual assaults while on duty.
The Pentagon has estimated that 10% of women in the military have been raped while serving and another 13% subject to unwanted sexual contact, a deep-rooted problem being ignored.
