Current Proposals to minimize Cellphone Theft are focusing on the problem retroactively--after the Cellphone has been stolen. Most of solutions require expensive, technological solutions that will increase cost to the consumer and will still require that the thieves be educated about the new safeguards. My proposal suggests that we attack the problem proactively--before the cellphone is stolen. By utilizing existing technology to eliminate the secondary market for Cellphones and focus on educating the thieves that the profit potential has been eliminated, we can remove the core reason why cellphone theft occurs--cellphones are small, high-value items with a viable secondary market.
