Commit $3 billion to the United Nations/aid agencies to provide food, water, and shelter to displaced Syrian refugees.

Widespread fear is mounting on the opening of American borders to a tiny fraction of the more than 9 million Syrian refugees fleeing terrorism, persecution, and conflict. If the United States is shocked at the plight of fleeing Syrians, yet hesitant to accept them into our borders, we should put our money where our mouth is. The United Nations and aid agencies in the region have asked for $7.4 billion this year, alone, to shelter and care for refugees; they have received $2.8 billion. The United States has recently committed almost another half million dollars to this effort, but this still brings the total aid committed approximately 40% short of the original request. We spend less than 1% on foreign aid, yet spend 54% on defense. Clearly, we have much, much more to do.
