Common sense, voluntary gun control step

Created by M.B. on December 17, 2012

We must do everything in our power to assure that the precious children and heroic women of Sandy Hook Elementary School did not die in vain. I realize that gun ownership by a well-regulated militia is a constitutional right; however, I also believe our children have the overriding right to safe and secure schools.
In the interim, while the national debate and proposed laws are taking shape, I am suggesting a voluntary, nationwide initiative to ask parents, relatives, anyone caring for a person with significant mental or developmental issues (including those caring for themselves) to hand over assault weapons, and other guns and ammunition in their possession, to their local police department. Perhaps the cost of their weapons could be reimbursed by the Govt.
