Dr. Shakir Hamoodi, a well-known businessman and cultural leader from Columbia, MO, was immorally sentenced to three years in federal prison for donating money to family, friends and charities in Iraq from 1991 and 2003. These donations violated a U.S. federal policy prohibiting any funds from being sent to Iraq during that time period.
Dr. Hamoodi has worked tirelessly to diffuse cultural ignorance toward Muslims and educate local residents about Islamic customs over the past 20 years. He has been an active speaking member of Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, a founder of the Mid-Missouri Peace Coalition, and a recipient of the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr Peace Award. He is an honorable man, and his punishment is the very antithesis of justice. President Obama, please commute his sentence!
