In American prisons there are more than 4,500 prisoners serving life sentences for, low-level nonviolent offenses due to their states mandatory sentencing guidelines. This is a massive waste of tax payer money (costing close to 300,000,000 per year) as well as an incredible injustice to some of the country's most vulnerable citizens. Additionally, nonviolent crimes should be exempt from mandatory life sentencing rules in every state.
