The latest of a series of get-out-of jail free cards issued to criminal banking institutions, the 1.9 B settlement with HSBC, is an outrage. Despite the fact that HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels and violating important banking laws, Justice elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank. We've seen this before, with special deals for Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase, among others. That these criminals are not being prosecuted is not justice, it is collusion. The government's moral authority has evaporated, and Justice is a sham, as this double-standard of who gets prosecuted and who gets off is seen in the light of day.
