We ask the President to assist in formulating more effective diplomatic measures in States Department dealings with counterparts in France to take steps to bring the conditions of the Roma back to basic standards of decency.
The U.S. government should publicly acknowledge and draw attention to multiple rights abuses suffered by France’s estimated 20,000 foreign Roma population and support France to take immediate steps to bring conditions; unchecked anti-Roma racism and violence, forced deportation and evictions, widespread inequality in education and denial of both individuals and collective human rights to basic standards of decency. Currently French law lacks the minimum safeguards required by the European Union to protect and integrate the Roma.
