Comply with the 1st Amendment and support real charities by ending tax-exempt status for religious organizations.

Created by A.S. on December 18, 2011

Under our tax code, religious organizations enjoy tax-exempt status like other 501(c) non-profit groups. This policy violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment, which states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..."

The current law puts our government in the position of establishing what constitutes a religion. Our leaders must pick which religions are "real" and which are nonsense and don't merit a tax break. Belief is based on faith, not facts, and so there can be no objective way to judge them.

If religions want tax breaks, let them apply to be normal 501(c) groups, and let them prove that they spend the majority of their revenue on charity rather than building upkeep, clergy salaries, and other religious purposes.
