We ask the Obama administration to formally condemn the capture and slaughter of dolphins and other marine mammals in Taiji, Japan.
As documented by the Oscar-winning film, The Cove, the residents of Taiji annually kill or capture thousands of marine mammals for profit. These intelligent, social, sentient creatures are slaughtered indiscriminately and cruelly, while others are separated from their families and social groups and sold into captivity.
The killing is literally covered up by tarps, showing the awareness of those perpetrating these acts that they are violating basic tenets of decency that few would tolerate.
This brutality is inconsistent with thoughtful and ethical stewardship of nature that our nation should support. We ask that the administration condemn it.
