Egypt’s coup d'état leaders overthrew the first democratically-elected government, installed unelected officials, shut down independent media outlets, and detained scores of social and political opposition figures.
The coup government decision to use deadly force against peaceful protesters resulted in the death of over 350 lives.
American values and international law are antithetical to Egyptian military actions. As champions of democracy worldwide, we are obligated to stand firm in condemning these killings and supporting the will of the Egyptian people expressed in the ballot box.
We urge the Obama Administration to leverage our sizeable military aid to demand that coup leaders restore the constitution and allow Egypt’s elected bodies and political forces to overcome this stalemate.
