On May 31, excessive use of force against protesters in Taksim in the heart of Istanbul (Turkey) prompted a rally of over a hundred thousand people. Prime Erdoğan ordered police to respond by burning protestors' tents; shooting directly at protestors with water cannons, rubber bullets, and pepper spray; raining down teargas from helicopters; and beating, trampling, and driving over protesters. At least two are reported dead and over a hundred injured. Demonstrators around the country now seek an end to Erdoğan's heavy-handed and anti-Democratic practices. We ask the White House to reaffirm its commitment to Democracy and its friendship with the Turkish people by condemning the Turkish government's response to the ongoing protests and urging greater freedom of opposition.
