Acknowledging the tragic events in Dallas, the summary execution of Micah Johnson by the Dallas Police Department sets a dangerous precedent. The use of drones to kill in law enforcement amounts to an extrajudicial death sentence and an abrogation of our constitutionally guaranteed right to due process - a right granted for even the most monstrous of transgressions. As law enforcement agencies seek to expand the use of drones, the practice has the potential to be grossly abused. This presents both a significant erosion of rights and a moral danger.
We request the President condemns the use of force by robots and drones in law enforcement. Further, we request a task force be convened to draft guidelines for the use of robots and drones in municipal, state, and federal law enforcement.
