Endangered species require sufficiently sized habitats in order to recover. While nature preserves help to establish a habitat location, population sizes can only grow to a certain amount and genetic variation may be limited. Connecting fragmented patches of nature preserves with 'corridors' allows for habitat size to increase a large amount without greatly increasing the amount of land dedicated to preservation.
