The Star Spangled banner became the United States National Anthem on March 3, 1931.. just prior to the great depression. It's tune, written by using a British drinking song and a poem was originally designed to mock the British rather than represent national sentiment.
The creation of this national anthem today is one of the few things that Herbert Hoover put into place that still stands, but clearly shows his bad idea.
Prior to it being the national anthem, the US had several 'hymns' including "My Country Tis of Thee" etc.
But in the modern era, "America, The Beautiful" first stanza more effectively represents the broad nature of our country and our outlook on the world. Besides, it's easier to sing.
