At the moment, the federal government does not classify sanitary pads and tampons as necessities. Since they are seen as a luxury, people are not allowed to buy them with food stamps and states place a tax on them. If someone is needing assistance from the federal government, finding an extra $7-$10 per female in the household can be extremely difficult. If they were considered a necessity, this would take a burden off many families that require government assistance. Changing the feminine products status from "luxury" to "necessity" would also push states to not tax them anymore, thus saving females hundreds of dollars per year.
