Juries' lack of understanding of the law has hundered the beauty of our justice system. Law students spend three years studying to fully understand our complicated laws yet we expect juries to be competent with no legal training, perhaps only a short introductory video. The system as it stands now basically results in jurors being taught the laws after hearing the facts of the case. This systems results in very ineffective application of the laws in question - how are the jurors to know beforehand whether any particular fact is relevant?
Finally, the system of being judged based on a jury of your peers may not sound like such a good idea these days. The average human IQ is on the decline, while the complexity of law is only increasing.
Change can be good, and needed.
