Today's Veterans face unprecedented challenges. Thousands are without jobs, income or a place to lay their heads at night. The suicide rate among Veterans is increasing and many VA programs are slow to assist in benefits needed or earned. It is insulting and disheartening that the IRS is allowed to offset 100% of a Veteran's income tax refund if a debt is owed. Food, shelter, and other essentials should take precendent over any debt that the service member was/is unable to pay. The government should consider limiting the amount of a tax refund that the IRS can offset or consider eliminating certain debts in totality for Veterans who qualify as indigent. We willingly serve our Country when no one else will. We deserve a fair chance at rebuilding our lives once we leave Service.
