Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in the last Congress introduced the single best piece of postal reform legislation thus far, Senate Bill 1853 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:S.1853.IS:). The Postal Service has overfunded its pension liabilities by $50 to $75 billion, has $44 billion in the account for future retiree health benefits, and, unlike any other American company or government entity, has to set aside $5.5 billion a year for the next 75 years of retiree health benefits over 10 years, starting in 2006.
The Postal Service deserves a fair chance to reinvent itself in the Internet age wherein many order items online that then have to be delivered. Return its pension surpluses to it and let it adapt.
