Officially moving from a 5-day work week to a 4-day work week has enormous implications for our economy. First, it will allow employers to maximize and focus their productivity while decreasing their payroll burdens. Secondly, it is safe to assume that most consumer spending occurs during the weekends, therefore we would be creating an environment conducive to more money circulating in the economy. Finally, it would drive more opportunity for quality family time which in turn would reduce stress, improve family relationships and probably decrease healthcare costs that are attributable to stress. The point here is that we need to think differently about improving our entire economy and a well structured study on the implications of this move may be a worthwhile effort.
