Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents a gallon and has remained level since 1993 when President Bill Clinton signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, increasing gas tax by 4.3 cents from 14.1 cents a gallon. It was increased to reduce the deficit, not for transportation and infrastructure. It is time that our Federal Excise Gas Tax be increased to help support the maintenance of our nation's deteriorating roads and bridges. Even though States have a gasoline tax, the State gasoline tax does not sufficiently cover the outstanding maintenance issues that our Federal roads and bridges have.
