The United States of America should accept more refugees than it currently does. Asylum-seekers come because they believe that living here will lead to a better life for themselves and their children.
After the recent attacks on Paris, several state governors publicly refused to accept further Syrian refugees. This response to the tragedy will do nothing to alleviate the situation. It is one that the federal government must disavow.
Humanitarian arguments aside, refugees are often educated hard workers who will pay taxes, buy homes, and fill job shortages.
We should set a good example for the rest of the world by welcoming those yearning to breath free. The federal government should expand its asylum program. Doing so is our right, our duty, and our privilege.
