Thousands of single service members (SMs) are being housed in barracks, which are owned and "managed" by their commands. Unlike SMs of the same rank living in on-post housing, these SMs are subjected to daily invasions of privacy and receive differential treatment for being single and living in the barracks. Commands can conduct room inspections whenever they want, and impose "cleanliness" standards that the average person (including the command) does not meet in their own residence (UCMJ for unmade bed), schedule cleaning details during off-duty hours, impose restrictions on possession of alcohol, visitors, curfews, etc. Take the barracks away from the commands. Use the same buildings as privatized apartment style communities, with rules like that of post housing.
