The Enterprise has had a central role in the military and political history of the past 50 years. Upon its launching in 1961, it was the largest military vessel in world history. It was also the first nuclear powered carrier in the world. It has certainly had as distinguished a career as either the USS Intrepid or the USS Midway. Both carriers currently serve as Naval Museums.
The Enterprise is a truly unique naval vessel, with critical involvement in Viet Nam, the Persian Gulf, twice, and Afghanistan. It has had roles as an extra in many films, including Top Gun, The Hunt for Red October, and many others. One of its Viet Nam era captains, James L. Holloway, later became the Chief of Naval Operations. This great lady deserves to remain great, not to be dismantled.
