INTER-FAITH PETITION TO CORRECT OFFENSIVE MISTRANSLATION: Change "Devils Tower" (WY) to "Bear Lodge"
Dear Mr. President:
Unlike a certain football team that neither you or I own, American People "have a stake" in this offensive name because the site is located on federally managed lands.
Recognizing that the 1906 United States’ action to establish a national monument at an existing sacred site and to name it “Devils Tower National Monument,” is highly offensive, and recognizing that this name was based on a faulty translation, I hereby call upon the United States, through whatever legal process is required, to immediately acknowledge the historical identity of the rock tower as “Bear Lodge” and to rename the park "Bear Lodge National Monument."
