Our foster care system is full of children who were exposed to alcohol before they were born. Most of them are not diagnosed with FAS because they do not have all the the required facial features. They do not receive the help they desperately need. We are failing them!
The current diagnosis requires particular facial features which is the result of alcohol exposure on days 19, 20 & 21 but pregnancy is 280 days and alcohol can cause damage on all of those days! These people do not understand consequences, are easily persuaded, developmentally delayed and have learning disabilities. Their brains have been permanently damaged.
Early diagnosis and therapies make all the difference in the world not only in savings for the country but in the lives of millions of people and those that love them
