The cost of ACA mandated health insurance must be deducted from AG in calculating fed student loan monthly payments

Created by H.G. on March 12, 2014

Under the ACA, most Americans are required to carry health insurance. Millions of uninsured Americans are repaying federal student loans. Now many of those people are facing a choice between repaying student loans and carrying health insurance. Because the ACA requires everyone to carry health insurance, and because it is to the benefit of other insureds to include young people who are most likely to be dealing with crippling student loan debt (and most likely to have jobs that do not provide health insurance) in the greater pool of insureds, the Dept. of Education should deduct the cost of such insurance from the borrower's gross income before using it as a basis for setting monthly payments on federal student loan income contingent repayment plans.
