Counsel Tony Abbott to end mandatory detention of asylum seekers in Australia

Created by J.M. on November 14, 2014

While Australia is hosting the G20 and painting itself as a major international player on the world stage, behind the scenes, they are committing human rights abuses and ignoring international responsibilities to asylum seekers.
Conditions on Manus Island and Nauru – the island states to which Australia sends asylum seekers – amount to “cruel, inhuman, and unlawful” punishment, according to the UN Committee Against Torture. This includes 789 children deprived of freedom, living through misery and abuse from no fault of their own. What's more, the Australian government is now trying to pass new laws that will extend powers to even return people to the danger they were fleeing. We challenge President Obama to stand up and protect these displaced people, and end their suffering.
