Create additional momentum for tax reform by requiring members of congress to fill out their tax returns manually

Created by G.J. on April 13, 2013

In 2013, the US tax code has ballooned to 73,954 pages. Since 2007, over 60% of US tax payers now pay someone to help them file their taxes. This has created an entire industry which in effect is a tax on the complexity of the tax system. Special interests and their exemptions have created a byzantine system that warps incentives, complicates investment decisions for companies, and leads to massive frustration by US tax payers every year. It is increasingly unlikely that tax payers can fully comply with the increasing mountain of regulations due to the complexity. Until congress is willing to reform the system, each and every member of the house and senate should be required to use the paper-based forms (no TurboTax, etc.) nor to avail themselves of tax advisors and do their own returns.
